A wind-driven wildfire that began Thursday is burning into an area of heavy timber along the Sonoma County coast near Highway 1, north of Jenner and Fort Ross.

The Woodside Fire broke out around 1:43 pm Thursday, and had burned around 75 acres as of 6 pm, according to Cal Fire. The fire began in an area north of Timber Cove, near Walsh Landing, and south of Salt Point State Park.

Just before 3 pm the fire had stood at 15 acres, but grew quickly over threefold within an hour due to high winds blowing inland at the coast. It is zero percent contained.

Smoke from the fire filled Sonoma Valley by 6:15 pm Thursday. But the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office was telling residents to stop calling 911 to report smoke, because the calls were overwhelming the system.

As KRON4 reports, Highway 1 is currently closed between Stewarts Point – Skaggs Springs Road to the north and Timber Cove to the south.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued covering an area between the coast and the South Fork Gualala River, and from Kruse Ranch and Hauser Bridge roads south to Fort Ross Road. The area also includes Salt Point State Park, Steelwater Cove Regional Park, Timber Cove, and Ocean Cove.

Cal Fire, in an alert, instructed those in the evacuation zone, "Leave immediately using available routes and follow instructions from emergency personnel," the agency said. "If you have time, check with your neighbors to make sure they are aware of the evacuation order."

A zone extending east to Goat Rock and Cazadero, which is just outside Guerneville, are under an evacuation warning.

320 firefighters are reportedly on the scene along with 31 fire engines, and as seen in the map below, multiple firefighting air tankers have flown to the area from around the state to help contain the fire. Five water tenders and three helicopters were reportedly aiding the firefight.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
